Piarco International Airport (IATA: POS, ICAO: TTPP) is serving the island of Trinidad and is one of two international airports in Trinidad and Tobago.

Located about 30 kilometers east of Port of Spain, it is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean.

The airport is also the primary hub and operating base for the country's national airline, as well as the Caribbean's largest airline, Caribbean Airlines.

It has direct flights to destinations in the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, and Europe.

Piarco International Airport sits 18 meters above sea level at 10°35′43″N and 061°20′14″W.

History of Piarco International Airport

Since 1931, Piarco International Airport has been the major air transportation facility serving Trinidad and Tobago and the southern Caribbean.

The growth and predominance of Piarco as an aviation center in the Caribbean is inextricably linked to the rich and colorful aviation history of Trinidad and Tobago.

In 1913, about ten years after the Wright Brothers made their first flight by a man in an airplane, two Americans, Frank Boland and George Schmidt thrilled crowds at the Queen’s Park Savannah with their daring aviation skills.

The wealth of aviation expertise in Trinidad and Tobago was brought to the forefront during the First World War when many locals joined the British Royal Flying Corps and distinguished themselves in service.

The airport was used both as a transport airfield and also for anti-submarine patrol flights over the southern Caribbean. It was returned to civil control after the war ended.

After several decades of slow growth, a major expansion of the airport was finally completed in 2001, with the construction of a new terminal building, and high-speed taxiways.

The old airport building is currently used for cargo handling.

In December 2019, the European Union awarded the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago a grant of 1.5 million euros to finance the installation of a large-scale solar panel system at the Piarco International Airport.

In 2021, Piarco International Airport was named the best airport in the Caribbean and 3rd best in the Caribbean and Latin American Regions.

The terminal is a fully air-conditioned, smoke-free building, equipped to handle peak-hour passenger traffic of 1,500 processing passengers through a fully computerized immigration system.

The Customs Hall has four baggage/cargo carousels.

Services to/from POS, including rental cars, taxis, shuttles, and buses are available in front of the terminal.

Rideshares and railway services are not available in Trinidad, but a ferry station is available in Port of Spain.

The distance to Port-of-Spain Ferry Terminal is approximately 30 kilometers.

All Car Rental Counters are located at the exit of the Customs Halls at Piarco International Airport.

The airport is not particularly large and is efficiently designed, so you will find these offices easily, but there are also signs to direct you.

They are generally open 24/7, but operation hours may vary. Please inquire at your service provider for specific service hours and return procedures.

Please be sure to have your valid driving license, passport, and credit card ready to present at the counter. You will need them when signing the rental documents.
